Scrummy Crew

Aimee Henderson is our Scrummy Crew Trained Teaching Assistant.

Scrummy Crew is a therapeutic intervention that uses the medium of food to enable children to explore and experience. nurture and the feelings connected to this, whilst also providing an opportunity to develop life skills.

  • Scrummy crew sessions will be planned and tailored to meet the needs of each child.
  • Targets will be set to ensure the children achieve the best possible outcome.
  • Sessions are run as a small group, once a week, as part of a structured intervention
  • Sessions are aimed at children who have particular anxieties around food.
  • Sessions are designed to give the children the opportunity to experience food in a range of different situations eg role play, preparation, exploration, preparation and taste. Without pressure.
  • Children will hopefully learn to tolerate non preferred foods with the hope of tasting them.
  • Long term hopes of the sessions are to teach the children life skills in a nurturing way so that they can achieve confidence which will in turn support independence.

Top Tips for Children with a Restricted Diets

Healthy Eating

We are a Healthy Eating school but we recognise that is not always easy for our children.  We work hard to encourage healthy eating and over the next term will share our top tips with you about ways you can encourage healthy eating in your child, even those with rigid diets.  Here is the first from our Scrummy Crew about a quick, easy and healthy meal that your child can help you prepare!

Have a look below at what we have been up to in our Scrummy Crew sessions:

Healthy Pizza

The children have made a healthy alternative to Pizza.

We used bread thins, sauce and a range of healthy topping. The children washed their hands before food prep began to ensure they were nice and clean. Each child prepared their own toppings before creating their healthy pizzas. We used mushrooms, peppers, chicken and cheese.

Our Method:

  1. Separate the thins and place on a clean baking tray.
  2. Use a spoon to place some sauce on top of each thin then use the back of the spoon to spread it out evenly.
  3. Sprinkle some grated cheese on top of the sauce and add the toppings of your choice (already prepared with the support of an adult)
  4. Ask and adult to place in the over on a medium heat for approx 10-15 mins
  5. An adult should then take the pizzas out and allow them to cool slightly
  6. Once cooled…ENJOY

The children collected some seeds from their peppers, so they can have a go at growing their own at home.

Take a look at our finished Pizzas! They were delicious!

Indian Samosas

In Scrummy Crew, we have again been looking at the Indian festival of Diwali. We wrote down some facts that we had learnt last week then prepared some delicious food. This week, the children made healthy tortilla samosas with chicken and vegetables. The children followed their instruction to fold, fill and seal their individual samosas before putting them in the oven. Once they were cooked, the Scrummy Crew took their delicious snacks back to class to share with their peers. All the children had a taste, Yum! Yum! These samosa were really easy to make and a healthy alternative. Here is the link if you want to try them at home. You could even try experimenting with different fillings.  Click Here for the recipe for our baked tortilla samosas

Diwali

We looked at the upcoming Indian festival of Diwali- Festival of Light. Diwali starts on Thursday 12th November and will last for 5 days. We looked at the story of Rama and Sita and coloured some beautiful Rangoli patterned too.

As well as all these fun activities, Scrummy Crew made some delicious Indian food. We made Tandoori Chicken, Basmati rice and Chakri (savoury rice snack). The children prepared and marinated the chicken and then once cooked, shared it with their peers. All the children loved exploring the smells and colours of all the delicious spices Yum Yum! Why not ask your children if they remember any interesting facts from our morning.
